U.S. diplomats predicted that support for the  North Atlantic Treaty Organization in America would continue and the alliance would adapt to the new political reality of Donald Trump’s election.

Throughout the campaign, Mr.  Trump has been critical of NATO, arguing it has not been focused on the threat of terrorism and questioning European spending on defense and security.

The U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Douglas Lute, said Wednesday that the alliance has always proven adaptable in the face of political change. He said the alliance is already taking steps that have addressed Mr. Trump’s critique, with increases in European defense spending and the appointment of a new intelligence chief.

“NATO is adapting to new realities,” he said.

Mr. Lute also noted that he expected the bipartisan support for the alliance to continue

“NATO has always been a bipartisan venture, it has been supported by both parties,” Mr. Lute said, speaking at a gathering at the U.S. Embassy to Belgium. “I am confident … it will remain a cornerstone—with bipartisan support—of American foreign policy.”
